Honouring Service: Ash’s Journey as a Gallipoli Scholar

SYDNEY, 17 October  2024 –

Ash Witenden reflects on how receiving the Gallipoli Scholarship has opened doors to countless opportunities and experiences, shaping both her academic and personal journey. Her story highlights the profound connection between the scholarship and Australia’s service personnel.

“At the start of 2022, while walking back from class, I received a phone call saying I had been awarded the Gallipoli Scholarship. I reflect on that day often as it opened a door to a range of possibilities and new experiences that I will forever be grateful for. Truly, the Gallipoli Scholarship is so much more than just financial aid. The scholarship and its connection to Australia’s service personnel is particularly special for me as both my parents served in the Australian army and saw service overseas. I feel incredibly blessed through the scholarship to uphold values of perseverance, courage, self-sacrifice, and mateship that veterans such as my parents have exhibited while on active service.

The scholarship has also provided me with no shortage of memorable moments. I have had the privilege of meeting His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley and Her Excellency Mrs. Linda Hurley at Government House in 2022, which inspired me to continue working hard in my studies and in all aspects of life. I will also never forget the Gallipoli Scholarship Presentation at the Merrylands RSL, where I sat next to the Turkish Ambassador to Australia and discussed my ambitions of diplomacy. His encouragement and insight into the field were incredibly influential in inspiring me to work towards my dream career. Yet, not only has the scholarship provided me with exciting new experiences, but it has also allowed me to meet the most incredible people who I now get to call some of my closest friends. I cherish these friendships greatly and have learnt so much from these talented and driven individuals. The Gallipoli Scholarship Fund truly is a tight-knit community that I am so thankful to be a part of.”
