Clancy Gundrum: From Scholar to Space.

SYDNEY, 20 June  2025 –

At the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund, we are proud to witness the transformative impact our scholarships have on young Australians. This story from Clancy Gundrum, one of our scholars, highlights how the LMA Bursary, offered through our partnership, has opened doors to incredible opportunities in the aerospace industry. It’s stories like Clancy’s that showcase the real-world pathways the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund provides and the lasting impact of our mission to honour the legacy of our veterans.

“When I was first awarded the inaugural LMA Bursary in 2020 through the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund (GSF), I could never have imagined the path it would set me on. What began as a scholarship to support my studies quickly evolved into an extraordinary gateway into the aerospace industry.

Over the past few years, LMA has opened doors I never thought possible — from touring Lockheed Martin’s headquarters and getting a behind-the-scenes look at emerging technologies, to attending the Avalon Airshow and connecting with aerospace professionals from around the world. These experiences, made possible through the GSF, offered invaluable exposure to the industry beyond the university classroom.

Now, as I near the completion of my double degree in Aerospace Engineering (Honours) and Astronomy/Astrophysics at ANU, I’ve taken the next exciting step: an internship with Lockheed Martin Australia. I applied and successfully completed a three-stage interview process. I was thrilled to be offered a role with the Advanced Systems & Technologies team, working on the Space Layer Optimisation (SLO) project — a perfect match for my passion in the space domain.

While the team is based in Melbourne, I’m incredibly grateful to have been granted the opportunity to work remotely from Canberra. This arrangement was all made possible by being a GSF Scholar.

A highlight of this journey was attending the 2025 Avalon Airshow as a GSF Scholar, where I had the chance to meet members of my future team ahead of my official start. It was the ideal environment to network, gain insights into Lockheed’s culture, and see firsthand the innovation taking place. I was also proud to witness several of my fellow GSF Scholars exploring their own opportunities at the event.

Though I’ve only just begun my internship, the support from the Lockheed Martin Australia team has been exceptional. My current focus involves onboarding — diving into briefings, meetings, training courses, and technical papers to understand the current state of the SLO project and begin preparing to contribute meaningfully.

I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to Tim Hobbs for championing student work experience, to Luke Tracey for welcoming me to the team, and of course to the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund — without which none of this would have been possible.

Being a GSF Scholar has meant more than financial support; it’s created real-world pathways into a career I’ve dreamed of, and I’m deeply grateful for where it’s taken me so far”.

Clancy Gundrum’s journey exemplifies the power of the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund in creating tangible pathways to success. Through partnerships with organisations like Lockheed Martin, we are able to provide opportunities that empower the next generation of leaders in fields ranging from aerospace to medicine. By supporting the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund, you help open doors for more young Australians, helping them achieve their dreams while honouring the legacy of our veterans.
