Empowering Future Leaders: Mikayla’s Journey as a Gallipoli Scholar

SYDNEY, 15 July  2024 –

Mikayla Budda-Deen, a proud Gomeroi woman and descendant of a World War Two veteran, shares her transformative journey as a Gallipoli Scholar. Her story embodies resilience, community support, and the pursuit of excellence.

“Being a Gallipoli Scholar has been an honour. As a proud Gomeroi woman and descendant of a World War Two veteran, I was fortunate to receive financial support from Calleo Indigenous through the Calleo Indigenous Bursary. This support allowed me to focus on my medical degree full-time without the burden of finding work.

This support extended beyond finances. At the Gallipoli Scholarship luncheons held each year, I met members of Calleo Indigenous whose kind words motivated me to excel and make them proud. My mentor, Michael Smith AO, was always there to support me and ensure I was coping with my studies. These personal connections made the scholarship much more than just financial aid; they instilled in me the belief that I could succeed and continue my journey to becoming a doctor.

The most memorable experience as a Gallipoli Scholar was meeting the former Governor General, General David Hurley, and his wife at Government House. Their Excellencies empowered us to strive for our goals and become future leaders. Additionally, touring the Australian War Memorial and participating in the Last Post Ceremonies allowed us to reflect on the sacrifices made by our ancestors. I also cherished meeting other scholars who shared my passion and determination to succeed. Their diverse experiences in different fields of study demonstrated the incredible reach of the scholarships.

Now in my third year of medicine, I am in my final year of receiving the Gallipoli Scholarship. However, the memories and connections I’ve made will stay with me, and I’ll continue to work toward my goals. After completing my medical degree, I hope to train as a Rural Generalist and work in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service and a rural hospital back home. I am forever grateful to the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund for their support.”

Mikayla’s journey exemplifies the impact of community support and mentorship in shaping future leaders.
