The nominated Australian or New Zealand veteran must have served in a conflict, peacekeeping mission or declared operation at any time from the First World War to the present day. This includes service throughout Australia during the First and Second World Wars as well as more recent deployments throughout Asia and Middle East.
A direct descendant is someone descended through a direct family line from the veteran. This does not include Great Uncles or Aunties, nor distant relatives, who served in a combat or peacekeeping role.

Yes. You must be entering the first year of an eligible university or TAFE course. Only existing Gallipoli Scholars can apply for second- and third-year bursaries.
Your course must lead to a degree, diploma or advanced diploma at an accredited Australian tertiary institution.
No. Gallipoli Scholarships are intended for students undertaking their studies in a full-time capacity.
You can apply once you have completed your gap year, provided you are commencing your first year of study and meet all other eligibility criteria.
You must be under 25 years of age at the time applications close. For the 2027 round, applicants born prior to 1 February 2002 will be ineligible.
Necessitous circumstances refer to anything that may have impacted an applicant’s ability to perform to their full potential during their secondary schooling or factors that will affect their ability to succeed in tertiary study. This may include, but is not limited to, financial costs associated with commencing university or TAFE, family or personal issues that distract from academic focus, as well as health or medical conditions.
No. You may instead provide a statement and other supporting evidence explaining your circumstances. However proof of receipt of a government benefit will assist reviewers in determining the level of financial need.
You may provide enlistment or discharge documents, a Certificate of Service, evidence of medals or awards, or the relevant section of a recent serving member’s PMKeyS record.

If you are having trouble compiling information, be sure to check out the Australian War Memorial and National Archives online repositories of military service. We also accept any photographs, magazine or news clippings, or any other supporting evidence that can confirm the eligible service.

Yes. Save your progress before leaving the portal, then return to the “Applications” section to continue editing.

Complete all required fields, upload your supporting documents and select “Submit application.” You will receive an email to confirm that application was submitted correctly.
No. Once your application has been submitted it cannot be amended. So make sure you take the time to review and confirm all sections are completed correctly.

Applications for the 2027 Scholarship Round open on 1 December 2026 and close on midnight 31 January 2027.
No. All applications must be submitted prior to the published deadline. Due to the large number of submissions received, late applications will not be accepted.
Applications are assigned randomly to members of the Scholar Selection Committee for scoring. The Committee is comprised of diverse group of ex-service, academic, business and government officials who review applications in a voluntary capacity. This process typically takes 4 weeks, after which applicants will be informed of their outcome.
Applications are assessed based on both merit, community contribution, leadership as well as personal and financial need. Meritorious achievement, community contribution and leadership total 40% of the total score weighting, with necessitous circumstances comprising the remaining 60%. Scores are apportioned based on a standard marking criteria used by all members of the Selection Committee.
No. Scholars are selected using the information contained in the written application.
Applicants will be advised of the outcome in the first week of March 2027. If you do not receive notification, ensure you have checked your junk and promotional mail inboxes before reaching out to the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund.
Yes. All applicants will be notified whether they are successful or not.
Applicants will be informed of the outcome via the nominated email address used when creating the Good Grants account.
Scholarship payments are made in two equal tranches of $4000. The first will be paid upon acceptance of the scholarship, if successful. The second is paid on completion of Semester One, provided the students intends to continue their studies in Semester Two.

Unfortunately not. Scholarships are only awarded to students commencing study in the application year. However, applicants who intend to defer their studies are encouraged to re-apply the following year, provided they remain eligible.
